Leeds Dock

Over the past two years MKM Creations have worked alongside Allied London in a large scale rejuvenation project at Leeds Docklands. The project in 2015 was given the green light to transform the area to become a vibrant and creative waterside community for both public and commercial activities.

Phase 1

MKM Creations were approached to provide their services working alongside leading architects and designers of how the vision could be achieved within a heritage area including restaurants, artisan markets, public entertainment events, office space and activities by the waterside.

Following a raft of creative designs including considerations of the environment, engaging character, practicality and budgets, MKM Creations were delighted to have been awarded the commission in 2015 to produce a range of Cor-Ten steel planters that could be fitted around existing frameworks.

As can be seen from the portfolio images over 800 metres worth of interconnecting sections provide planters, seating, distinctive protection barriers and signage. A truly stunning finish on the iconic Leeds Dock.

The Detail is in the Design

MKM developed a unique and bespoke system for joining multiple planters, thereby creating the illusion of a single planter with a very subtle vertical seam. All bolted connections are below the planting surface as is the lip detail at the connecting point. The lip detail continues around the perimeter of the planter. All corners of the planters were fully welded, ground then polished to offer a beautiful seamless construction.  The effect of the Cor-Ten steel links a contemporary element to the industrial heritage of the site.

Phase 3

After a successful first and second phase MKM Creations were then commissioned to complete the final phase in Autumn 2017.  This involved creating over a 50meters of bespoke Cor-ten balustrading snaking around Leeds Dock and including multiple level chances and curves, bespoke street furniture, feature benches with The Leeds Dock Logo laser cut into them to give an extra personalised touch and large tables and benches.

The feedback from the client and also people of the local area has been superb and the area is already being used by vast amounts of the public.
